Are you saying 'Bush' or 'Boo-ush'?

It's pretty interesting to watch the reaction of the American left, not to mention the world, this week. Granted I've haven't followed politics for all that many elections but I've never seen a level of anger close to that being displayed right now. My mixture of anger and despair seems to be a pretty commonplace emotion. I wonder if we'd have seen the same thing from the American right if things had gone the other way. I obviously don't have any facts but I suspect we wouldn't have. I'd elaborate more but WAAAY too much packing and unpacking occupied my day and my energy level is zilch.

Question of the YesterDay is still open. If you've seen the show, you should know and if you haven't, think of what sci-fi shows that I watch have the type of humor that would give birth to a character named 'Skankita' (hint: It's not TNG).

I was watching the Daily Show tonight and they were talking about reaction around the world to Bush's re-election (in short, it's bad). They showed the cover of the The Daily Mirror (a British paper); the headline summed up my thoughts quite well. I actually went to the Daily Mirror's website and downloaded the cover but then I realized I had nowhere to post it and that I was too lazy to sign up for anything that'll let me link to it. I could just link to it on their site but it'll probably move in the next day or two. Anyway the main part of the headline was "How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB?". A question I've thought over quite a bit since Wednesday. Still haven't had much luck in coming up with answers though.

This one's from Deep Space Homer

Question of the Day: One what sci-fi series would you be able to find a character named 'Skankita'?

Looks like that whole hope thing didn't last too long. My confidence in democracy is pretty much nil right now. To start with Bush has trouble stringing a coherent sentence togtehr. And he rushed America into a war based on evidence that was insufficent at best, and downright made up at worst. Not only did the reasoning given for having to rush to war turn out to be false, but then America's costly efforts (both monetary and life-wise) ended up making Iraq into a far more unstable place than it ever was when Saddam was in charge. On top of that the American economy went in the shitter and Bush racked up a record deficit. Yet somehow Bush manages to win re-election against a man who's biggest flaw is that *gasp* he allows new facts to influence his decision making process (apparently once you've decided something you've got to stick without and ignore any pesky facts that might get in the way (Bush is pretty fucking good at that)).

So now we've got another 4 years of Bush and now he's got even more power than he had before. To make things more fun he's also likely to get at least 2-3 supreme court appointees. Bush is almost certainly going to fill the spots with right wing nutjobs and, depending on which Justices retire/die, that could shift power in a very bad way in the Supreme Court. And considering all the power Bush and co have now the SC is one of the few safeguards against Bush's mandate.

Something tells me that when history looks back upon our time this election will be looked at as a pivotal moment in history. And not a good one.

This actually does a pretty good job of mirroring my emotions from polls closing till just before Kerry conceded.

Well it looks like I may not be experiencing much in the way of relief or despair just yet. As I write this the good guys are down by 7 (249-242) but it's looking like Ohio and Iowa will both have to wait quite sometime for a definitive result. If Ohio comes down to provisional ballots (which looks quite probable) now it'll mean at least another week and a half of waiting before anything is decided for sure. It'll definitely take some luck for Kerry and Co to pull off the win in Ohio but I'm not giving up just yet.

No post last night due to extreme tiredness on my part. It seems that late night drinking, little sleep, long drives and work do not make for an energizing combination. Funny that.

Tomorrow's the election. I've been looking forward to and dreading it for quite some time now. It'll be great to be rid of Bush if things work out but if things don't work out then the hope that Bush'll be gone soon will be crushed.

Be sure to check out tomorrow night's blog. If Kerry wins it'll be filled with much happiness and relief. If Bush wins it'll either top a piece I wrote on Bush's faith-based initiatives program back in January of 2001 for angriest thing I've written or said anger will be overwhelmed by despair.

Times like this I really wish I could vote. Not that one vote is likely to make a difference; it'd just make me feel better.
