Schedules and I don't get along.
While schedules are great in theory and seem like a great way to get things done, I can't stand them in practice. There's something about saying, "I'm going to work... now!" and "I'm going to have fun... now!" that strikes me as very restrictive. It particularly hampers my ability to have fun as it's not really something you can force yourself to do.
I prefer to set vague outlines and do any sort of tasks that need to be done whenever I feel like doing them. There are drawbacks to that method, however, as it sometimes means that things you wanted to have done, never get done as you never start them in the first place (or start them and never come back to them).
I think it's this approach to tasks that causes people to think of me as 'lazy'. Of course, I often am lazy, but that's a different issue.
I also think that it may be my dislike for rigid scheduling that has made me hesistant towards choosing a career (and left a couple of options which are generally more flexible than most jobs), but I digress.
I've decided, even though I'm not a fan of schedules, to impose a bit of one on myself. I've wanted to write a lot of stuff (short stories, essays, etc) since I've been home but I've never been able to get myself into a habit of doing so. I've started writing a couple of times but other than this blog, nothing I've written has been any longer than a few paragraphs. My schedule is aimed at improving that.
On days where I'm not already doing something at the time (which is most days), I plan to write from 2 to 3. I don't have any specific goals as to what I write (I'll figure that part out as I go along) but I want to try and get into the habit of writing. I know that 2-3 pm isn't always going to be available as an option so I also I'm setting 10-11 AM, and the hour before I go to bed as secondary times, should I be unable to write at 2.
Today is the first day of my plan so I have no idea how successful it will be but I figure it's worth a try.
Quilted Porcupine, away!
